About YSIG
Background
The Yale Student Investment Group (YSIG) is the oldest independent undergraduate fund in the country. Founded in 1982, we have grown our portfolio to approximately $450,000 in assets under management. Our investment approach is rooted in deep fundamental research.
For over 40 years, YSIG has been home to driven undergraduates who have bonded over a shared passion for investing.
Investment Teams
Investment groups are the core of YSIG, employing different strategies, including long/short equity, global macro, and special situations, across a variety of sectors. Each investment group is headed by an experienced upperclassman who leads discussions about markets, provides sector/strategy-specific training, and facilitates idea generation and pitch construction.
For the 2025-2026 academic year, YSIG will have six investment groups: Consumers, Industrials, Macro, Media & Telecom, Small Cap & Special Situations, and Technology.
CONSUMERS
The Consumers Group covers a wide range of consumer-facing sectors including apparel/accessories, food/beverage, transportation/entertainment, and department/discount stores.
SMALL CAP & SPECIAL SITUATIONS
The Small Cap & Special Situations Group invests in companies with a market cap of less than $2 billion. They also find mis-priced assets in situations frequently misunderstood by the general market, including mergers and acquisitions and bankruptcies.
INDUSTRIALS
The Industrials Group focuses on companies that manufacture and distribute capital goods in support of industries such as aerospace and defense, construction and engineering, and electrical equipment and heavy machinery.
MACRO
The Macro Group focuses on companies that will reap benefits from broad trends. By analyzing shifts in areas such as interest rates, trade flows, and fiscal or monetary policy, the group identifies firms best positioned to thrive in changing economic environments.
MEDIA & TELECOM
The Media and Telecommunications Group analyzes companies across the media, communications, and technology landscape. Our coverage spans traditional outlets such as television and film networks, as well as emerging digital platforms, including streaming services and social media.
TECHNOLOGY
YSIG’s Technology Group studies companies that produce and provide technology. Given the volatile performance of tech companies in recent years, the Technology Group aims to conduct vigorous due diligence and dive deep into their investments.
